using CLM3.5 history files for CLM4.0 runs

If nobody else responds, you should try it and let us know.

If you use a different surface dataset (fsurdat) with clm4 than with clm3.5, you will need to run interpinic. If you use the same surface dataset, it may work right away but, if it doesn't, again interpinic may solve the problem.

Hi Sam ,
I tried to use interpinic to convert a CLM3.5 restart file into a CLM4.0 type by using interpinic but I am getting an error:

levsno1 dimension does NOT exist on the input dataset
NetCDF error code = -46
NetCDF: Invalid dimension ID or name

I think the CLM4.0 restart files have this parameter levsno1 and 3.5 does not so interpinic is not able to work on it !!

any solution to this ?

We don't have a prepared solution for this, and we will not be able to help you with this. You will have to modify interpinic or find another solution yourself.
