What does CLM_CO2_TYPE do?

I would like to run a simulation with a constant value of CO2.  I can do this by changing "CCSM_CO2_PPMV" to a new value in env_run.xml, but I see that there is also a variable for "CLM_CO2_TYPE".  By default, this seems to be set to "diagnostic".  Should I change it to "constant"?
I have run other simulations with CLM_CO2_TYPE set to dianostic, and the CO2 in those simulations remained constant (which is what I want).  What does this variable do?
