What's the word 'community' means?

Recently, I am reading CESM/CLM related documentation, and there is a question that is always confusing -- what's the word "community" means? When I use the Google-Translate, there are these definitions: 1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common; 2. a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals; and 3. a group of interdependent organisms of different species growing or living together in a specified habitat, in ecology. I prefer to use the ecological concept of community, but not very sure. What do dear you think as developers? Or does it mean something else?

The word "community" refers to the climate modeling community, and it signifies the fact that CESM is openly available to the scientific community for use and contribution.
