whether initialization files (xxx.i.xxx files) will be used in a branch run?

Hi dear CESM users,
  • I had a case built without setting it as a branch run and the model automatically matched a few initialization files for this run. I later modified the env_run.xml file and changed it to a branch run with other related settings modified as well. I also copied the restart and pointer files to the case's run directory. After running for a couple of years, I suddenly found that the initialization files set in the xxx_in files are still wrongly presented (like ncdata = 'XXX/inputdata/atm/cam/inic/fv/cami_0000-01-01_1.9x2.5_L26_c070408.nc'). However, the restart files that I want to use also seem to have been used too like the following sentences from the log files show.

  • Restart pointer file is: ./rpointer.atm
  • Branch run will start from:
  • XXX/MY_CASE_NAME/run/My_CASE_NAME.cam.r.2015-01-01-00000.nc

  • I am wondering if actually the restart files that I really want to use have overwritten the wrongly-used initial files in this case. I know in branch run xxx.r.xxx files are only needed for the case to run but I want to confirm if the initialization files would also be in effect in my case and leave some impacts on my run. If the initial files were used in this case, then I need to rerun it.
 Many many thanks!

THe component log files should be very clear about what files were used in starting the model.  From your description I think that the initial file was ignored but the logs should confirm.

The problem is that in the atm.log file I also saw the wrong initial file used:  Initial dataset is:XXX/inputdata/atm/cam/inic/fv/cami_0000-01-01_1.9x2.5_L26_c070408.nc                 -> I do not want to use this initial dataset... ...Restart pointer file is: ./rpointer.atmBranch run will start from:XXX/MY_CASE_NAME/run/My_CASE_NAME.cam.r.2015-01-01-00000.nc Do you think the initial file is used?
