Why is SPCAM being phased out?

Hi! I just saw on the Atmosphere Working Group page that SPCAM is likely to be phased out soon. What is the upcoming alternative to superparameterization in CAM? Variable-mesh resolution could possibly go down to cloud-resolving resolutions yet, but I haven't seen any scientific studies on this yet.
