Will all the variables stored in restart file be used as the initial/restart condition for CLM5 ?

In clm4.5, tlai (the leaf area index) is not written out to the restart file, while clm5.0 does output tlai to the restart file. Is the tlai a necessary variable for the model to restart ?

How can I check whether a variable in restart files is used/not used as the initial/restart condition for the model run?

I don't see any conditionals in the code that would indicate that tlai is not written out to the restart files for CLM4.5. In the simulations I've done recently, tlai appears in the restart file regardless of whether it's a CLM4.5 run or a CLM5 run. What configuration are you using that doesn't have tlai written out to the restart file?
