Zero dust deposition flux from CAM4 to CLM4 in CESM1.2.2 run with prog dust

Hi all,

I am trying to run a few CESM1.2.2 runs to examine the effect of dust in a paleoclimate scenerio. I set "CAM_CONFIG_OPTS" to "-phys cam4 -prog_species DST" and included modifications per Albani 2014.

While DST01DD to DST04DD, DSTSFDRY and DSTSFWET have reasonable values, DF_DST01-04, a2xDSTDRY1-4 and a2xDSTWET1-4 are all zeros. The dust mass in snow in CLM is also zero. I assume the dust-in-snow effect is then totally non-existent.

This seems pretty puzzling. Can somebody elaborate what might have gone wrong? I can share config files and output if needed.

Thanks a lot!!

Correct: The dust mass in snow in CLM (SNODSTMCL) is not zero. Rather, it's very small despite larger dust loading and deposition, compared to prescribed dust experiment (basically default F1850 compset).

Hi Wade--
Hmm, I am not very proficient in CESM1.2 which is an older version... My only suggestion would be to check if the cam4 namelist variable aerodep_flx_specifier has the deposition fields you want. Not sure if that helps though.
I am not sure about the difference between DST01DD, DF_DST01 and a2x_DSTDRY1... by looking at the history fields I feel like they are similar things.
It might be helpful to contact Samuel Albani or Natalie Mahowald.
And, it might be easier to work on later CESM2 versions? I think NCAR labs mostly support CESM2 now.
