Extended Prescribed SST Data

Hi all,

I am using CESM2 with the FCnudged compset and plan to run simulations for the period 2022–2023. However, the default prescribed SST dataset appears to only extend to 2021 form the website (i.e. sst_HadOIBl_bc_1x1_1850_2021_c120422.nc).

Could anyone please advise where I might obtain a prescribed SST dataset that includes 2022–2023? Alternatively, would it be appropriate to use sst_BRCP85C5CNBDRD_ensmean_1x1_2006–2100_c150729.nc as a substitute for sst_HadOIBl_bc_1x1_1850_2021_c120422.nc for this period?

Thank you very much for your time.

Hi Will,
Information about observational prescribed SST data for AMIP runs is available here:
AMIP SST/sea ice forcing datasets | Community Earth System Model
The data available on that site runs through 2024.

While you are welcome to use whatever SST dataset you would like to force your simulations, there will be model biases present in the sst_BRCP85C5CNBDRD_ensmean_1x1_2006–2100_c150729.nc file.
Best,
Adam

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your reply.

From the link you provided, I found the sst_COBE-SST2_bc_1x1_1850_2025_c250710.nc dataset, which would be suitable for my purposes. However, it seems that I do not have permission to download this file from Glade. But other SST files in the same directory are seem accessible.

```
ls -ll sst_COBE-SST2_bc_1x1_1850_2025_c250710.nc
-rw-r-----+ 1 hannay cseg 2180430680 Oct 27 15:05 sst_COBE-SST2_bc_1x1_1850_2025_c250710.nc
ls -ll sst_HadOIBl_bc_1x1_1850_2022_c241003.nc
-rwxrwxr-x+ 1 hannay cseg 2143105548 Oct 3 2024 sst_HadOIBl_bc_1x1_1850_2022_c241003.nc
```

Could you please let me know if there is another way for me to access this dataset? I also checked the directory at https://ftp.cgd.ucar.edu/cesm/inputdata/atm/cam/sst/ but couldn’t find this file there.

Thank you again for your help!

Hi Will,
The permissions for the /glade copies of the files have been updated; let me know if you have any problems accessing the 1x1 file.

A request was also put in to add the COBE-SST2 datasets to the web. CESM input datasets are now available from the NSF NCAR Geoscience Data Exchange (GDEX), and the files should be up here within a week. To access the data, click on the Data Access tab, followed by clicking on Web Download next to Atmosphere Input Data Files. Finally, filter the file listing by searching for "sst_COBE".
Best,
Adam
