CCSM3 T31_gx3v5 initial drift...

Hi, all:

I am running CCSM3 with T31_gx3v5 resolution starting with I.C. from the
CCSM package. Some 20yrs simulation does not give me stable SST(??).
Can anybody give me 'estimated time' for the model to have stable SST?
Is it a problem of the low resolution?

Thanks,

Jinho

How are you determining that the SST is stable? When CCSM3 is started 'cold' i.e. from Levitus initial conditions it takes of order 100 years to stablize the SST and ice fields. If starting from a previous CCSM3 run as initial conditions the SSTs may stablize more quickly, but it all depends on how in balance the initial conditions are with the configuration of the model you are using (no matter what the resolution).

In my experience 20 years is probably not enought to achieve a stationary climate (particularly if you are interested in the deep ocean circulation) so aim for 100 yeas as a first try.

Hi, Richard:

I use the IC from the package which, i belive, is obtained from the previous expt.
'Drift'... SST indices of several locations are plotted and show 'decreasing' for
20yr period of integration. I will run some more years. I'd like to make sure.

Thanks,
Jinho
