Cecile Hannay's response was correct.  She is referring to env_run.xml.  There are specific instructions on how to change the history output files in the middle of a run, in the CESM user guide, actually, and it is very helpful.

Thx for your reply. I was actually using the user guide and I'm running CESM1.0.5. It seems that it depends on using CESM1.0.z vs. CESM1.1.z. The older verions do not have the REFCASE stuff in env_run http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.0/cesm/cesm_doc_1_0_6/a5009.htmlwhile it obviously exists in the newer version:http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.1/cesm/doc/modelnl/env_run.htmlThe modifications to env_run.xml are hower not mentioned in the user guides or I did not find it:http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.2/cesm/doc/usersguide/x2268.html Is it then enough in the CESM1.0.z case to only change continuation to false in env_run.xml as the other entries do not exist?

The mods to env_run.xml for CESM 1.2.x are done with the 'xmlchange' command, as outlined in the link:http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.2/cesm/doc/usersguide/x2268.htmlThere are instructions for setting up a branch run for CESM 1.0.5 here, and branching is apparently necessary to when changing the output history fields, at least for good bookkeeping purposes:http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.0/cesm/cesm_doc_1_0_6/x2536.html Since I've only been using CESM 1.2.2, I hope someone from NCAR or another user can help you further with CESM 1.0.5.

Starting the branch run with  in env_run.xml the cpl.log file ends with the line(seq_infodata_Init)  read rpointer file rpointer.drvAnd I get the error message in the ccsm.log file:            forrtl: No such file or directory            forrtl: severe (29): file not found, unit 98, file /run/rpointer.drv Update:Problem got solved by copying ALL files from the run folder of the previous simulation in the current run folder. It seems the model needs more files than what it gets based on the user guide / namelist options. I don't know exactly now what the problem was but at least it runs like that...
