change the number of processors in CESM2.1.2

I made changes in "env_mach_pes.xml" about the nodes I needed for my CESM2 run, and then ran the command:

./case.setup --reset

I found that all my changes made on "env_mach_pes.xml" return to its default value. So what is the right step here to make changes for the nodes/processors for CESM2?

Update about my progress. I solved the issue by using the tool of pelayout
./pelayout --set-ntasks 384

Then type
./case.setup --reset
./case.build --clean-all
./case.build
