changing history output mid-run

I'd like to add new history variables mid-run but I believe this is not permitted without branching to a new run name. Is there a trick to do this without changing the run name? I would rather not break-up my run with different run names.

Specifically I'd like to save some daily data from CAM.

I found the answer to my own question.

Set brnch_retain_casename to true in the cam and clm namelists and it should work. I haven't verified it though because blueice has been mysteriously down for two days now.
