Changing run start date with create_clone

I want to clone an existing CESM run (/glade/work/cmip6/cases/DECK_2deg/b.e21.B1850.f19_g17.CMIP6-piControl-2deg.001 ) but then change RUN_STARTDATE from the original value of 0001-01-01 to a later value in the run, say 0301-01-01. If I just do an xmlchange to change RUN_STARTDATE will it pick up the correct restart file from the original run? If not, what additional steps do I need to take?
