Changing surface data in CLM4_0

Using CESM1.2 (CAM5 and CLM4_0) I've been trying to run simulations with changed surface data. Sometimes the runs work, sometimes they don't and I hope someone can point me to the reasons for this behavior. In general, it is not clear to me if there are technical reasons for this behavior (certain changes in surface data are not possible/aloud for instance) or perhaps that certain changes imply too big of a shock for the climate and make it crash.Generally I use two steps: 1) Perform a 5-day simulation with the new land surface data and finidat = ''. 2) Use the Interpinning tool to 'regrid' original CLM restart data onto new land surface data and run with changed surface data and new restart file.In some cases both step 1 and 2 work, sometimes only step 1 and again I found cases where even the 5-days did not finish (initialization did finish). I hope two examples provide some clues as to why this could happen.1) If I change all grid cells of the Antarctic land mass from 100% glacier to 100% desert, I do not get passed step 1.2) If I do the same but for all glacier areas in the Northern Hemisphere (exept Greenland), the model will crash in step 2. Any help is very welcome.Pepijn
