Difficulty Creating and Building a SCAM Case in CESM 2.1.5 on WSL (New User)

Hello CESM Community,

I am a new CESM user and currently working with CESM version 2.1.5. I am running CESM on Ubuntu installed via WSL on a Windows laptop.
I am trying to create a new case and build the SCAM (Single Column Atmosphere Model). However, during the process of creating the new case, I encounter multiple errors, and despite several attempts, I have not been able to resolve them successfully.

I followed the standard CESM workflow (navigating to cime/scripts, creating a new case, setting up, and building), but errors appear at different stages, preventing me from completing the case creation and build process. Since I am new to CESM, I may be missing some required steps or configuration settings specific to SCAM or to running CESM under WSL.I have attached the relevant error messages below for clarity.Screenshot 2026-01-31 221457.pngScreenshot 2026-01-31 221554.pngScreenshot 2026-01-31 221649.pngScreenshot 2026-01-31 235302.png
I would greatly appreciate any guidance on:
1.Common issues when creating and building a SCAM case in CESM 2.1.5
2. Additional setup requirements when running CESM on WSL
3.Suggestions on how to diagnose and fix case-creation or build errors

Thank you very much for your time and support.

Best regards,
Richa

Hi Richa,

Welcome to CESM. I'm not aware of anyone that's tried running cesm2.1.5 on a Windows laptop. But this looks like a porting issue, so I'm going to move this to the porting forum. But something you can try is running a simpler case, like and A compset at a resolution of f45_g37_rx1. Also, your screen capture cut off your create_newcase line so I can't see the entire command. Could you also include any xml files you've changed for your port.

Thanks
Chris

The error : No variable NODENAME_REGEX found in case suggests that you have modified file
cime/src/drivers/mct/cime_config/config_component.xml - is this true?

Also Chris is correct, I have never heard of a port to WSL, you might want to consider finding a linux system if you can.
