The variable 'TOTVEGC' is the amount of carbon in the total vegetation. This includes both above and below-ground biomass (see the code here). You can get the amount of C in individual plant components (LEAFC, GRAINC, LIVESTEMC, DEADSTEMC, etc.) and sum whichever of those you are interested in. I also think the variables @samrabin suggested should work, although they are usually not available by default so you would need to change them from 'inactive' to 'active'
