How do calculate the total SO2 emission (combine surf and elev input data)

Dear CAM-CHEM user,I am wondering what is the proper way to calculate the total SO2 emission (combine all the sectors' data) from ar5 input data, ar5_mam3_so2_elev_1850-2010_c20100902_v12.nc and ar5_mam3_so2_surf_1850-2010_c20100902_v12.nc since they are in different units, molec/cm2/s and molec/cm3/s. Could someone help me out? Or could someone tell me where I can locate the code for converting emission into concentration in the model, and thus I can figure out the right way of the calculation? Hi Agilen,to convert from molec/cm2/s to total emissions in kg/year or so, you can convert molec to number mol with the  avog. konstant = 6.022e23 molec/mol,
and you can calculated the mass, with the molecular weight (in g/mol).
Then you have to multiply by the area of each grid point to get the total number. For the external forcing, you will have to multiply by altitude, and to convert s to year, you have to multiply by 86400.*365.Simone
