How the multi-instance work?

Hi,
I'm trying to understand how the multi-instance in CESM work.
Since the detail does not documented. I do not know my recognize is correct or not.

Here is my recognize:
The multi-instance support is purely made by cime and cpl with split MPI_COMM.
So the code of components does not need to modify for multi-instance.

Is it correct?
