MOM6 Ice Shelf sponge in layer coordinate

Hello, I've been setting up some idealized layer coordinate ice shelf configurations and am trying to make sponges for the domain boundary. I noticed this comment MOM6/src/user/ISOMIP_initialization.F90 at main · mom-ocean/MOM6 discussing the need to combine different initialization files for temperature and salinity. I was just wondering if someone could please explain why this is (would the density from combining temperature and salinities from different setups then not be inconsistent with the density layers?), and whether these files should be created with or without an ice shelf present?
