No AOD outputs at regions north of 67°N

What version of the code are you using?
- I ran FCnudged using CAM6.3 and CTSM5.2.

Have you made any changes to files in the source tree?
- No

When I checked the output of AODVIS, the northern regions did not have data. Could anyone tell me why? Is it due to SGLC or is it due to using FV dyncore?

Please see the attached image. Thank you.

Best,
Yuan

Hi Yuan,

What values are you expecting regarding AOD? Are you sure there is no AOD in the model? It might just be very low. Consider trying a different color-bar or scaling - see the two attached images of AODVis 2019-01 from a simulation I completed.

We are working on the automated comparisons to MODIS with the ADF. CESM does seem to be a little low compared to MODIS.

Dear Rebecca,

Thanks for your response and sharing useful information.

It is rather strange that the AODVIS did not have valid data north of 67N so the plot shown the region as blank. If the AOD value was low, it should be shown in dark blue.

I checked another FCnudged simulation using CESM2.2.2 and found the same problem.

I am still seeking where is wrong.

Best,
Yuan

Hi Yuan,

Oh, I understand now. Do you see the same problem in July? I think it might be related to polar night (when the sun doesn't rise above the horizon). The Arctic circle is at 66.6 deg N.

Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,

Thanks for your suggestion. It makes sense.

I plotted the AODVIS in July and saw a blank on the South Pole. I understand it now.

Best,
Yuan
