Dear CESM STAFF

What version of the code are you using?
I am working on CESM2.1.5, CAM6.0 and CLM5.0.

Have you made any changes to files in the source tree?
No

Describe your problem or question:
I am a beginner and I have the following component set: 2000_CAM60_CLM50%BGCDV-CROP_CICE%PRES_DOCN%DOM_MOSART_CISM2%NOEVOLVE_SWAV (I am using this and not HIST_CAM60_... because is not compatible with dynamic vegetation. For my experiment also is important to have CAM and not atm forcing data.

I am understanding that this component set is designed for year 2000 conditions (e.g modern level of greenhouse gases ). I would like to know if changing the default (sst_HadOIBl_bc_1x1_2000climo_c180511.nc) prescribed file for sea surface temperature (STT) for a historic one (like sst_HadOIBl_bc_1x1_1850_2014_c150416.nc) make sense or not. Here I am saying that my experiment deals with 2000 conditions but SST varies (e.g. from 1850 to 2014). I would greatly appreciate your comments.

The best strategy is to run with a HIST config instead of a 2000 if you want time-varying conditions. This will set all streams appropriately.

If you take your 2000 case and then just swap the SST file, the behavior will depend on how you set the data "ALIGN" settings, since the "years" contained in the two files you linked are different. The 2000 case is designed to set ALIGNs to keep looping over a 12-month file continuously, while the HIST case is designed to set ALIGNs to run through years sequentially serially.

But again, I'm not quite sure of the utility there. If you are interested in a different averaging window/climatology, I would suggest using the 2000 case and creating your own 1-year SST file designed to mimic the existing default you have linked.
