procedures for CNDV spinup

Dear CESM land forum members,I plan to set up a Carbon-Nitrogen Dynamic Global Vegetation Model with CO2 about 20 ppmv lower than AD 1850.I have read the following two sections in CESM Research Tools: CLM4.5 in CESM1.2.0 User's Guide Documentation. And the procedures are listed below:1)  Spinup of CLM4.0-CN      Three steps:       1.1) AD_SPINUP      1.2) EXIT_SPINIP      1.3) Final spinup for CLM4.0-CN2) CLM4.0 CNDV Spinup
Because the land group provided spunup files from step 1 (Spinup of CLM4.0-CN), for two resolutions (f09 and f19) and two time-periods (1850 and 2000) , my question is whether I might use the spunup files of f09 at 1850 for my 1-degree CNDV CCSM4 simulation (with CO2 values ~20 ppmv lower than the levels at AD 1850), such that I can skip step 1)  Spinup of CLM4.0-CN.
Thanks
Feng

Hi Sam,Will you please point me to the location for the spinup file for CNDV at f19 resolution that is mentioned in the following section of the user's guide. Thanks!http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.2/clm/models/lnd/clm/doc/UsersGuide/x12640.htmlBy the way, is there one spinup file for CNDV at f09 resolution? If not, I will use interpinic to interpolate f19 resolution to f09 resolution. Thanks!Feng

The scripts will automatically pick up the correct initial file for your cndv case if such file is available. I do not know where to point you otherwise for this file, and I do not know whether such file is available at f09.Sam Levis

Hi Sam, I tested with a 1-degree fully-coupled hybrid cndv run using CCSM4/CESM1.0 (/glade/p/cesm/releases/cesm1_0_5), and this run did not pick up the correct initial file. As a result, the dynamic vegetation started from bareground. So I did a 400-year dynamic vegetation spinup with  land/data atmosphere preset I_1850_CN. I have two questions now:1) Is 400-year long enough to spin up the dynamic vegetation?2) What is the precedure to add the initial condition from the dynamic vegetation spinup into my fully coupled hybrid case? Thanks!Feng He

1) 400 yrs seems enough if you start cndv from a spun up CN state. The compset that you used (I_1850_CN) should point to a spun up initial file. You may need to use the interpinic tool to get that initial file to work with your cndv run. The clm user's guide has documentation on interpinic.2) The initial file from the offline case will either work or it won't in your coupled case. It won't work if variables have different vector lenths in the two simulations. Unfortunately interpinic does not map initial data from one cndv simulation to another. If you run into this problem, then you may need to do the cndv spin up in coupled mode starting from a spun up CN state.Sam
