Question about T_GRND in CLM restart file

Hi,

I ran an I-compset simulation with CLM6.0 SP (IHistClm60Sp) using the cesm3_beta05 tag. It is a land spin-up forced with the ERA5 data, and I ran it for 10 years.

After the run, I checked the land restart file (*clm.r.*.nc) and noticed that the variable T_GRND has values of 272K scattered over the global land regions. The 272K seems to be the default soil temperature value, which makes me wonder if a certain setting reset the soil temperature back to the default value, or somehow the soil temperature didn't evolve in time.

Could you advise on possible reasons why the soil temperature might be reset to 272K in the restart file?

Attached is the plot of T_GRND in my restart file. The "white dots" in the left panel are regions with a value of 272K, and the right panel shows the same plot when I mask out the 272K as NaN.

Thanks!

I expect it is because those are inactive columns. There also can be multiple columns per gridcell, so you'll have to choose which type to plot (e.g., vegetated, crop, glacier, etc).
