I'm looking over

b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.011.clm2.h0.SOILLIQ.185001-189912.nc

and SOILLIQ is defined on "levsoi" levels:

float SOILLIQ(time, levsoi, lat, lon) ;
SOILLIQ:long_name = "soil liquid water (vegetated landunits only)" ;
SOILLIQ:units = "kg/m2" ;
SOILLIQ:cell_methods = "time: mean" ;

and ZSOI and DZSOI are defined on "levgrnd" levels:

float ZSOI(levgrnd, lat, lon) ;
ZSOI:long_name = "soil depth" ;
ZSOI:units = "m" ;
float DZSOI(levgrnd, lat, lon) ;
DZSOI:long_name = "soil thickness" ;
DZSOI:units = "m" ;

However, "levgrnd" is 25, and "levsoi" is 20, and "levgrnd" exists as a coordinate array but "levsoi" isn't.

How can one integrate SOILLIQ in the vertical?

Thanks!

levsoi and levgrnd have the same coordinates for the first 20 layers. I'm not sure when/why levsoi was dropped as a coordinate variable.

Hi, Oleson

Do you know what is the difference between SOILLIQ and H2OSOI, since it seems they both represent soil moisture.
Or in other words, if i hope to use soil moisture (generall concep in research), which variable i should choose.

Best
Ru
