Temperature and salt budget diagnostics in CESM2/POP2

Hi,

I am using POP2 output from the CESM2 Single-Forcing experiment and would like to perform temperature and salinity budget analyses.

However, I found that the archived POP2 output does not include the horizontal diffusion terms:

HDIFB_TEMP
HDIFB_SALT

or the KPP vertical mixing tendency terms:

KPP_SRC_TEMP
KPP_SRC_SALT

As a result, I am currently unable to fully close the temperature and salinity budgets.

I would like to ask:

  1. Has anyone encountered a similar issue when performing temperature or salinity budget analyses with CESM2/POP? If so, how did you handle the missing terms?
  2. Is it possible to calculate or reconstruct HDIFB_TEMP, HDIFB_SALT, KPP_SRC_TEMP, and KPP_SRC_SALT from other available POP2 output variables?
  3. If these terms cannot be reconstructed from the existing output, what is the recommended way to handle them in a temperature/salinity budget analysis? Would it be reasonable to treat the missing mixing terms as part of a residual or unresolved mixing term? If their magnitudes are small compared with the other tendency terms, could they be neglected under certain circumstances?
Any suggestions or experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
