time varying u and v in SCAM iop file

I have time-varying (hourly) u and v profiles in my SCAM iop file which I would like to use to force my 5-day SCAM simulation. The initial u and v are used to initialize the the run, but later values of u and v are apparently ignored. Is there a standard way to force the model u and v fields to match the iop or to relax/nudge the u and v fields towards the iop values? Or do I have to modify the code directly to do this (e.g. stepon.F90)?
