Water demand from natural PFTs

Hi all,

A fairly broad question but hopefully easy for those in the know - how would I go about estimating the water demand from natural PFTs (as opposed to crops)? I'm interested in comparing how much water is used by tree PFTs vs irrigated crops, domestic/industrial use, etc. for SSP scenarios. I use QIRRIG for the irrigation and data from the TETHYS project for estimated domestic/industrial use following SSPs, but I'm not sure which CLM field best represents water demand from natural PFTs in the same sense as we would think about water withdrawal for agricultural use. It may be that this isn't how the model thinks about natural vegetation (in which case fair enough), but I wondered if anyone else has looked at this sort of thing.

Thanks,

James

I'm not sure if this helps but water demand by natural vegetation could be determined from transpiration?
