In relation to the posts above, it seems like the CESM2-LENS ensemble members all have restart files at 5 year intervals. Are there restart files available between these intervals? I would like to branch some ensemble members from particular years.

If not, what might be the next best approach for this? Could I restart a member from the closest restart date and get bit-for-bit reproducibility up until the specific year I want to branch from? Or could I use the outputted fields to create a restart from a specific date?

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Restarts are available for every decade. I've made a set available from a CESM2.1 historical run on the f09_g17 grid via Globus Online at


Let me know of any problems.

HI strandwg,

Initially, I was facing some login issues, which are resolved now.

Recently, I have been facing following error while extracting the files:

tar -xvzf b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.001.rest.1980-01-01-00000.tar.gz

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

Those tarfiles aren't stored compressed so I don't see how you ended up with one. Can you explain how you got the file?

Yes, you are right. I compressed it since I was getting the following error with the original .tar file, which I downloaded from the Globus repository:

tar -xvf b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.001.rest.1980-01-01-00000.tar
tar: This does not look like a tar archive

tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors.

I tried to compress it and then extract it, but the error persisted. I think to am making some mistake. Please help me!

The restarts available are the only ones there are.
