How to Derive Aerosol and Chemical Number Concentrations for a Certain Size Range?

Hi,

I am a student working with a CAM6 model output (not CAM-Chem). I want to derive the mass and number concentrations of a certain aerosol type and I have several questions about the aerosol outputs:

1. For example, if the coarse mode include dust, bc, soa etc... Does the output "num_a1" includes dust, bc, soa etc as well? What is the definition of "num_a1"? Can I use "num_a1" if I want all the aerosol species from coarse mode?
2. How do I derive the number and mass concentration for coarse mode? What about for BC in the coarse mode only?

I think I have to use num_a1 and dngd_a1. I do realize num_a1 is in 1/kg and bc_a1 is in kg/kg (hopefully I am not looking at the old history field).
Does that mean:

Mass concentration for the entire coarse mode for all sizes: ??
Number concentration for the entire coarse mode for all sizes: num_a1*rho_dry?
Mass concentration for BC in coarse mode for all sizes: bc_a1*rho_dry?
Number concentration for BC in coarse mode for all sizes: ??

3. If I only want to look at sizes > 10 micron or 100 micron from the coarse mode. How do I cut off the tail? Do I need to get the concentrations with sizes > 10 micron for all dust, bc, soa, and other aerosol species first?

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi Ching,

I'm going to move this post to the CAM-Chem forum. I know you're not using CAM-Chem, but the chemistry folks will know better how the default chemistry works!
