Hi all,

I'm trying to reproduce some CLM5 input files I generated on Cheyenne a while back, using the mksrfdata_map tool. For consistency reasons I need to use the historical files from CLM5.0 rather than the newer CTSM5.2 ones which have different land use. The filenames are:

mksrf_landuse_histclm50_LUH2_<year>.cdf5.c170629.nc

Previously these files were stored in the now defunct /glade/p/. Looking in the new location for input files, there is a matching directory at:

/glade/campaign/cesm/cesmdata/cseg/inputdata/lnd/clm2/rawdata/pftcftdynharv.0.25x0.25.LUH2.histsimyr1850-2015.cdf5.c170629

But the only files it contains are 1850-1855 and 2000-2007, and I need 2000-2014. Does anyone in TSS know where I could find these files? If anyone has them knocking around in a work or scratch directory, it would be great to be pointed to them.

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

In /rawdata I also see
/glade/campaign/cesm/cesmdata/inputdata/lnd/clm2/rawdata/pftcftlandusedynharv.0.25x0.25.MODIS.simyr1850-2015.c170412
/glade/campaign/cesm/cesmdata/inputdata/lnd/clm2/rawdata/pftcftlandusedynharv.0.25x0.25.MODIS.simyr1850-2015.c170327
These contain the full range of 1850 to 2015 from what I can tell. However, if you need the specific time stamp c170629, then you will need to reach out to Peter Lawrence.

Hi Sam,

Thanks, I'll try these and compare to my existing files to see if there are any differences. Will also get in touch with Peter.

Looks like the old data are still around but are stored in a directory to which I don't have access:

/glade/campaign/cesm/development/lmwg/thesis/data/surfacedata

Have passed on an access request.

Hi @James King and @slevis , I used the raw data of land use files to build finidat files of SSP scenarios in 2020-2100. I find the land use data for some SSPs includes 2 folders, such as the SSP2-2.6. There has pftcftdynharv.0.25x0.25.SSP1-2.6.simyr2015-2100.c20230226 and pftcftdynharv.0.25x0.25.SSP1-2.6.simyr2016-2100.c181217. I did not saw any readme files about the two folders. So the first question is what's the differences of the two folders of files? And I find the c181217 files was created by Peter, so is it the files he discussed in his paper (Investigating the climate and carbon cycle impacts of CMIP6 Land Use and Land Cover Change in the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) & GMD - The Land Use Model Intercomparison Project (LUMIP) contribution to CMIP6: rationale and experimental design)? Or those files are the datasets of LUH2? How can I cite those files?

Hi,

Short answer is you'd have to ask Peter Lawrence what the specific differences are, but my guess would be that the older files with the 2018 timestamp were generated using CLM5 and the newer files with the 2023 timestamp were generated with CTSM5.2. These files would then have slightly different PFT fractions because of changes in the underlying datasets and methods used. The reason I was looking for the older files earlier was that I wanted to generate CLM5 input data which had the same PFT fractions as some data I generated a few years ago before the move to Derecho.

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for your answer. I will try to contact Peter Lawrence for more details about this. Thanks.
