Questions about solFe_scenario4_current_gx1v6.nc and access to CESM1.2.1 Scientific Guide PDF

Dear CESM community,
I’m currently working with CESM1.2.1, specifically its POP2 component, and I have two related requests:

1. Generation of solFe_scenario4_current_gx1v6.nc

The model automatically reads in soluble iron deposition from a file named solFe_scenario4_current_gx1v6.nc, which supplies the iron_flux variable. I haven’t been able to find any documentation or explanation regarding:
  • How are the iron_flux values calculated?
  • Which atmospheric model or dataset were used to generate this file?
  • Was it derived through offline processing or scripted conversion? If so, where can I find the code or workflow for that?
  • Is there a reference in the CESM Scientific Guide or elsewhere that describes this dataset?
Understanding the origin and assumptions behind this file is essential for my research, especially if I plan to adjust iron input or test alternate deposition scenarios.

2. CESM1.2.1 Scientific Guide PDF

I’m currently unable to access the online Scientific Guide for CESM1.2.1 — the website appears down or inaccessible. Could anyone kindly share a PDF of the guide, or point me to an archive where it’s still available?

I have already looked through the CESM1.2.1 documentation directory and tried accessing links found in various responses, but so far without success.
Thank you very much for your help and any direction you can provide

Thanks so much for your response last month. I understand that the website might still be down, but I wanted to check if there have been any updates or if there's any estimated time for it to be back online now. Also, if possible, could you share the guide in PDF or Word format in the meantime? Appreciate any help you can provide.
We are re-working these sites. I am not sure when they will be back up. @mlevy do you have an answer here?

Hi @zhangsw

We're running into several different issues here:

1. CESM 1.2.1 is very old, and hasn't been supported for several years. It was left in a functional state, but with no guarantee that the model would get additional updates or the documentation would be maintained
2. Here at NCAR, we've had to take down most of our publicly available websites as we transition between content management systems. There is a lengthy process involved in getting a website back up, and we don't have the resources to go through that process for models that are no longer supported so it is unlikely the CESM 1.2.1 Scientific Guide gets hosted again in the future.

The good news for you is that I asked around about the iron dataset and have a trail of breadcrumbs for you to follow :)

That file was created using the output of the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM), configured to produce iron deposition. (That was a one-off run, it is not a common configuration for the model.) Personal correspondence from the person who created the dataset says

"Scenario4" is a modified version of scenario 3 in the Luo et al. paper, where we reduced the initial solubility of the combustion Fe by 50% ...
I think the way to cite it is "soluble Fe deposition from Luo et al. 2008, as modified by Krishnamurthy et al. 2009."

The Krishnamurthy paper is this one (and the Luo paper is this one). I suspect that neither the original CAM data nor the script that produced this file are still around, but I hope those papers help you answer whatever questions you have!

Thank you for the helpful information! I'm sorry to hear that the CESM 1.2.1 Scientific Guide will no longer be available. I appreciate your guidance on the dataset and the references to the papers. I’ll follow up on them and reach out if I have any further questions. Thanks again for your help!
