Restart files for CMIP6 CESM2.1 pre-industrial control run

Hi All:

We would like to do perturbed experiments starting from different moments of a long pre-industrial control run. I found that the CMIP6 CESM2.1 piControl run (b.e21.B1850.f09_g17.CMIP6-piControl.001 ) would be a ideal control run for us. We want to add a virtual heat flux to the ocean.

It seems that the length of this run is 1100 years. It would be great if we can have the restart files maybe every 50-100 years. Does anyone know how to get the restart files of this run? Thanks a lot!!!

The restarts from b.e21.B1850.f09_g17.CMIP6-piControl.001 are available on campaign storage, which is accessible via Globus, or logging into

data-access.ucar.edu

The directory is

/glade/campaign/collections/cmip/CMIP6/restarts/b.e21.B1850.f09_g17.CMIP6-piControl.001

Dear Gary,

I was also looking to use some CMIP6 restart files, and found this thread. I get a 'permission denied' response when I try to access /glade/campaign/collections/cmip/CMIP6 after logging into data-access.ucar.edu.

Hi there,

I am trying to find restart file to run a BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6 from 1980 onwards. We have set upt everything to start the run in 1850 but we have been running in so many hardware issues and it is not in our power to do anything about them. We are slowly running out of time so our plan B would be to use existing restart files from 1980, since in our project we are interested in 1980 onwards only. As Brian wrote, I can't access this /glade/campaign/collections/cmip/CMIP6/restarts/ or this http://data-access.ucar.edu/

Thanks for any help!

Brian and Nathalie, would you please try to access /glade/campaign again?

You can also access that directory directly from casper.ucar.edu

Greetings! As a researcher based in Tokyo, is there a process to access this dataset? According to the discussion,

The restarts from b.e21.B1850.f09_g17.CMIP6-piControl.001 are available on campaign storage, which is accessible via Globus, or logging into

data-access.ucar.edu

The directory is

/glade/campaign/collections/cmip/CMIP6/restarts/b.e21.B1850.f09_g17.CMIP6-piControl.001

it seems to be accessible via Globus. I have registered on Globus but I don't seem to know the procedure on setting the File Manager to be able to access them. Unfortunately, the helpdesk in NCAR said Globus would be my only option for this since I'm not affiliated with an institute or university in the US.

Thank you very much for all your big help on this matter.

If you don't have an NCAR account, you won't be able to access that space.

However, if you can tell me what year(s) you want restarts from, I can put them on NCAR's Data Sharing Service and you can access them with Globus that way.

The years available are

Hi Dr. Gary Strand!

I'm sorry for the delayed reply.
The start of the year was quite busy in our university.

Thank you for your kind assistance and this rich dataset!
Since we plan to do some tests for the year 2000 onwards, is it possible to obtain restart files for 0151 and 0161?

Thanks a lot!

Dear Dr. Strand,

I am also studying about CESM2 now, and may I ask about one question about the available years listed?
Does the simulation start from the year of 1850?
So my assumption is that at the year "0151", it means the year of 2000?
Could you give me some guidance on that?

Thank you very much in advance!

Sincerely,
Zihan

When we run a B1850, it cycles over pre-industrial conditions. Basically, the model perpetually repeats the year 1850.
So the year 0151 doesn't correspond to year 2000. To get the restart files representative of year 2000, you need to get restart files from a BHIST and not a B1850.

As Cecile notes, year ~151 of an 1850 control doesn't correspond to our year 2000. The time span of a control run is best thought of as just a counter from the start of the run, with no connection to the calendar we use.

There is not a state of the 1850 control that corresponds to year 2000, as all the forcings are fixed at 1850 values.

Let me know how you want to proceed.

Thanks Cecile and Gary for the correction and sorry for the lack of understanding!
I should have recalled and already noticed this B1850 definition from a former thread replied by Cecile.

Based on the definition of B1850, I think our interest will now be on the longer runs.
Is it possible to receive restart files for the following years?
1401 1451 1501

Thank you very much!

Hi Gary, I have some question.
I run a BHISTcmip6 compset and I found the "RUN_REFDATE" value="0501-01-01". Does this mean that I need to integrate again for 1300 years before I have an output in 1850-01-01?Then, I saw the CESM2 SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED CONFIGURATIONS, but I don't konw clearly the difference from the ''b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.001'' to ''b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.010''.
Thank you very much!

No. For a control run, the choice of year is arbitrary. You can assign the start date of any run to any year.

Then, I saw the CESM2 SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED CONFIGURATIONS, but I don't konw clearly the difference from the ''b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.001'' to ''b.e21.BHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical.010''.

Those runs had different initial conditions from the 1850 control.

Thanks, Gary. I'm running the case BHISTcmip6 with a resolution of f19_ g17, but I found it seems that this is running from the initial state. This is "RUN_TYPE" is "startup" and "RUN_REFDATE" is "0001-01-01". As far as I know, the case BHISTcmip6 with a resolution of f09_ g17 has an initial field with an integral of 500 years, so there's no spin up. But my simulation doesn't need such a high resolution. I need to change the physical process and run it for more than 100 years to study, so high resolution will cost more.
So I might need to run hundreds of model years to spin up for the case BHISTcmip6 with f19_g17. Do you have the spin up files that I can use as initial data to start running from 1850 without needing spin up? Thank you very much.
